M.Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D., author of the Thyroid Source Book, Just released The Thyroid Cancer Book. In a concise 150 pages Sara covers the topic for patients, spouses, and family. The Cancer centers should offer this book to all their patients when first seen. In consultation, I am ordering the book for my thyroid center.

There are 9 chapters. Some have catchy titles.

Sara is the best person to write this book. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 20. She heard the word cancer, but did not know what a thyroid gland was. The cancer had spread to her neck lymph nodes. She had total thyroidectomy, and node dissection, (removal of cancerous nodes). She then was rendered hypothyroid to get her ready for hospitalization and a large dose of radioiodine. She was hypothyroid, and depressed, as she had to drag herself to the hospital for testing and therapy. Then, in a move, which is not done anymore, she was given external radiation. This was daily external radiation treatment, which made her sicker than all the out things done previously. She suffered more for lack of knowledge of thyroid cancer. She dated a medical student who attended her surgery to learn about her disease!

She did not have a Thyroidologist as her doctor, only the E.N.T. Surgeon. She states the information he gave her on thyroid cancer would sound like "See Spot Run " today. After a painful old type nodule removal under local that was very painful, she was not told it was cancer. Her mother was told, and without the benefit of a physician to explain, her mother told her she had cancer.

Sara is a good example, of a young women who needed to get a second opinion, before she went forward with testing, surgery, and therapy. Even in 1983, there were thyroidologists, and endocrinologists to guide her through her difficult time with Thyroid cancer. The use of external radiation, and a painful Nodule removal biopsy, were wrong then, and would never have been done if she had the benefit of a thyroidology evaluation.
