Dr. Guttler's Newsletter
August 1, 2002
Hello to all my subscribers,
Thyroid Disease on the Web
The Thyroid Home Page, www.thyroid.com, is my site. It is the oldest private thyroid site on the web. It was the first thyroid heading at Yahoo in 1996. The main sites for thyroid were nonprofit organizations such as Thyroid Society of Canada, and Thyroid Foundation of America in 1996. Now, in 2002, when you search Google for thyroid, you get 1.3 million citations. Thyroid.com comes up 6th out of those 1.3 million sites. There is a new area on the search site, that are called sponsored sites. There are four before the real search sites are listed. People pay to be there. What are these and are they worth visiting?
Thyroidsolutions.com
This site offers so called natural therapies, for weight reduction. The weight gain that occurs with hypothyroidism is temporary, and is corrected with replacement therapy. If you are still overweight it is not due to thyroid failure. Obesity is never due to thyroid failure alone. Do not waste time at this site. Living Well plan costs about $60.00 and is a fast buck operation to avoid.
Thyroid Supplements allwellco.com
They claim that "natural" nutrients can treat thyroid problems, such as hypo, and hyperthyroidism. We have definitive therapies for those conditions now. Skip this site, as it will cost you money for unnecessary unproven supplements. Also the Kelp they recommend is just the wrong thing to take with thyroid disease not related to iodine deficiency. It can cause nodules, goiter, hypothyroidism, and even hyperthyroidism in patients with real thyroid disease.
Superb Thyroid Support www.naturalhormones.com
Any site that states you can stimulate the thyroid naturally back to health Is to be avoided at all costs. The thyroid is not usually able to be brought back to life, except in transient conditions such as Viral Thyroiditis.
Thyroid Home Tests www.testsymptomsathome.com
This paid site has home kits for blood collection for TSH testing. The fee Is $34.95. This is not a home testing kit, but a blood send out kit. You must send for the kit, by asking for a prescription from one of their doctors. A kit is sent out, and then you stick your finger and put a few drops of your blood in a collection devise, and send it in for analysis. Their doctors will review the result and send you a report. They do not tell you the credentials of the doctor. He may be a foot doctor for all you know. Unless you are in the mountains of the Congo Africa, this testing seems unnecessary. Skip this site as well.
Well, all four of the paid sites are not worth visiting. I will review any new sponsored sites as they appear. There will be more for sure, but be skeptical about any site that pays to be there.
Next newsletter will begin to cover the real sites that come up because they earned their place through years of service to thyroid patients. We will look at the pros and cons of these top ten sites.
Anyone on the newsletter list server by mistake, because they were on the Fontana di Vita Winery list, can remove themselves from the thyroid newsletter if they wish.
Also, Synthroid, the brand name thyroid hormone since the 1960's, has been approved by the FDA without any revision. This was a witch hunt by the FDA. If any drug has proven itself as worthy of being Grandfathered in, Synthroid is the one. Like Penicillin, it saved many lives over those years. I remember when it was the only pure hormone available. I saw people wake up from usually fatal hypothyroid Coma with a single shot of 500 micrograms Synthroid I.V. The FDA should not have caused all the patients to fear that their drug was going to be removed from the market, without real grounds. It caused me many hours of hand holding to reassure my patients that their drug was safe. Meanwhile, one of the generics, Levoxyl, was ordered to recall 6 million pills. Also, Levoxyl generic T4 pills were recently reformulated. This move by Jones, makes it necessary to retest all the people changing to the new formulation. You can bet Jones will not reimburse you for the extra expense of retesting. Synthroid is still the one and only brand name in my opinion.

The Thyroid Home Page does not receive any outside funding of any
sort, and especially none from Abbott, (Synthroid), Jones, (Levoxyl)
or any other thyroid drug companies. (Unithroid, Levothyroid, or
Armour). No other top ten thyroid web site can make that claim.
