The ability of pathologists to render an accurate
diagnosis on a thyroid nodule FNA biopsy is variable. Always seek
a second opinion. It can safe you an unnecessary surgery, and alter
the surgery plan.
All
cytopathology interpretations are performed on site by Dr. Guttler.
Rapid turnaround means less stress and worry while you wait for
the report to come back from the lab.

It shows the 3 forms of cytology with papillary thyoid cancers.
Solid usually the cytology is positive
Partially Cystic may show metaplastic cells, and positive TG washout
Purely Cystic no cancer cells, but TG washout positive
TG washout studies with a negative cutoff at 1 ng/ml.

Similar washout studies can be done for medullary thyroid cancer, calcitonin, Lymphoma, flow cytometry, and Parathyroid hormone PTH. A parathyroid gland can look like a cancer node and PTH washout can prevent removal or ablation with Ethanol.
